23rd December 2009 - Update
The programme has been announced for next year's May Railtour.  The 'Dalriada' will feature RPSI steam and chartered diesel haulage, as far North as Coleraine and as far South as Dublin (or beyond - some details are still to be confirmed!).

Click here for more details.  You can reserve your place with the advance booking form available here.

Coming rather sooner, though, is the next of our Belfast Meetings.  The first half will be a talk by Roy Forsythe and Richard Hayes on 'Lost Stations of Ireland' - a look at the remains of the disused structures the railways have left behind them.

The second half is summed up by the trailer below.

17th December 2009 - News
Our Santa trains from Dublin have been running well this year, with many happy families meeting Santa in the comfortable surroundings of our vintage carriages, hauled by one of our steam locomotives.

No.4 at the head of the Santa Special train.

However last Saturday evening things became unstuck as No.4 broke down. Our friends in Iarnród Éireann managed to arrange a diesel locomotive at short notice to pull the train for us the following day (Sunday). Santa was on board handing out presents to the children as usual, but rather than white steam drifting past the windows and the steady puff of a steam locomotive, the diesel engine roared along in a haze of blue exhaust. Meanwhile our engineers were assessing the problems with No.4 to see if they could be fixed in time for the next weekend.

No.208 deputising for No.4, steam is used to heat the train, just not to haul it!

We are working hard to repair No.4 and have her ready to go for Saturday's trains.

A full photonews report of December's activities, both north and south, will appear on this website once the pressures of running and maintaining the trains involved ease off in the new year!

  • Next Wednesday will see the second of the new season of Belfast Meetings

  • A Memorial of Dundalk Works - 1880-1959
The Great Northern Railway’s engineering works in Dundalk will be remembered in an illustrated talk by Charles P Friel on Wednesday 11 November 2009 in the Parke Hall, Orangefield Presbyterian Church on the Castlereagh Road, Belfast, beginning at 7.30pm.

The GNR(I) Works built 47 new steam engines as well as hundreds of carriages and wagons and also repaired and maintained the company’s vast fleet of vehicles and machinery.

All of this work needed a huge number of highly-skilled craftsmen, engineers and clerks, foremen and message boys amongst many others.

A general view of the works in its heyday (Duffner, Dundalk)

The erecting shop in 1959 (EM Patterson / CP Friel collection)

The Works outlived the Great Northern before finally passing out of railway hands on 1st October 1959.

The evening will be a lavishly-illustrated tour of the Works and will include scenes from most of the workshops in the place and the people who worked there.  Some of the pictures to be seen in the talk date back to the late 1890s and many have been only rarely seen in public, if at all! The pictures will include many rarely-photographed aspects of the Works including some work done for others - not all of them railways. There will be pictures too of the final years of the Works and what happened after closure as well as some coverage of what has been preserved.

Dundalk Works had much to be proud of and the breadth of its activities will come as a surprise to many. The talk should catch a flavour of this once-great institution.

Don't forget the meetings have moved to a new location with wheelchair access.  As ever tea and coffeee will be available and the RPSI sales stand will be in action.  Click here for the full meetings programme for this season.

19 September 2009 - News
As most will have seen in the media, the railway line between Portadown and Lisburn was closed for the early part of today.

We would like to apologise to our prospective passengers who had hoped to travel on our steam train trips between Lisburn and Portadown in connection with the Country Comes to Town festival in Portadown.

We are very disappointed that the line through Lurgan was closed this morning, preventing our locomotive and vintage train from getting to Portadown from our base in Whitehead.

We were in constant contact with NI Railways and were informed that their staff had been advised that the opening of the line would be too late to allow our train to operate as planned.

And apologies for the delay in getting this update on the website - the webmasters were working shunting the train back into the yard at Whitehead.

24th August 2009 - News and updates
The media's attention may have been on other parts of the railway last weekend, but we have some big news of our own!  On Saturday the RPSI officially took over its sixteenth locomotive, No.141, first of the 141 class bo-bo General Motors diesels of 1962.  When the RPSI was formed she was the latest in technology, but is now thoroughly well-travelled and historic in her own right.  She will represent her class as part of the RPSI collection for generations to come. Read more about it here.

The following day saw our oldest engine in action, taking passengers from Dublin Connolly to Greystones and Greystones to Wicklow - and of course back again!  Click here for photographs.

  • Tickets are now on sale for our Santa Steam trains in the Dublin area.  Click here for the Christmas booking form, or see the Events Page for information on all our trains.
  • The weather stayed mainly dry for the trip from Portadown to Bangor on Saturday 1st August. Despite a delay in departure from Portadown, the operation ran more or less as planned and a fine day was had by all.  No.186 was accompanied by 5 coaches and the Dutch van.  It was a long day for the RPSI and NIR crews due to the connecting empty train mileage from Whitehead to Portadown morning and evening, plus the light engine run from Bangor to Belfast Central Junction to turn the locomotive.
  • The Kingstown Special trains on Sunday 2nd August, with No.4 and Cravens set, ran without a hitch and the weather was kind. 1,750 tickets were sold over the 5 trains and time keeping was excellent.  There is some brief coverage here of the run (19:50 minutes).  There are some pictures here
  • Barry Pickup captured this photograph of No.4 at Sandymount whilst working the 17.55 Kingstown Special Connolly - Dún Laoghaire.  The DART 'customer' on the left appears to be too absorbed in his book to notice 4 and her train! The futuristic new roof of Lansdowne Road rugby ground is visible in the background.

31st July 2009 - Update
The August 2nd "Kingstown Specials" are now sold out.

29th July 2009 - Update

19th July 2009 - Update

This weekend sees another 'Summer Steam' open day at Whitehead.  With guided tours of the site, this allows visitors a unique chance to see what goes into keeping our trains running, as well as some of our large collection of locomotives and carriages that haven't been on the main line recently.  The Guinness engine will be giving rides - with a choice of riding in brake van 81 or a more comfortable carriage - and teas and coffees will be available!

14th July 2009 - news
In Dublin's Inchicore Works, work is continuing on our Cravens carriages. 1523 is being repainted.

The photo shows one of several primary coats now applied.

Following this further sanding and preparation is required to achieve a smooth finish.

The under frames and buffers are being stripped back for application of black paint.

The team hope to commence the top coat shortly.

  • FUNDING NEWS

  • Two new grant awards have been made this year to date, from Northern Ireland Museums Council (NIMC) and the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), to assist with funding for a Small Exhibits project and the next stage of all important Heritage Skills training for NIR personnel involved with steam operations.

The RPSI Whitehead Youth Team, led by Mark Walsh, will benefit from £14,000 funding, shared equally by NIMC and HLF, to allow the Society’s small exhibits, presently stored by members in diverse locations, to be brought together at Whitehead and made available for public display, interpretative and educational purposes. The project will entail repairs to part of the Whitehead Stables block, to provide suitable and secure conditions for central storage, and work to Dining Car 87, including the creation of an exhibition area with display cases.

The recently completed Conservation report, one of a number commissioned by the Society last year with HLF assistance, recommended that, as an accredited museum, steps should be taken to bring our collection of artefacts together as an educational and interpretative resource, adding another dimension for visitors to the site. External displays/exhibitions with other accredited organisations could also be supported.

The RPSI's Museums Committee will have the opportunity to check the record and descriptions of all artefacts held by the Society as they are moved to the central store, and it is hoped that this initiative will encourage the donation of new items over time.

HLF have also supported further training of NIR personnel, following upon the successful scheme last year which saw the passing out of two new steam drivers. More operating personnel will be identified to undertake a programme of theoretical and practical training which will allow them to progress to the steam footplate, thus ensuring that the heritage skills are maintained and used within the current railway operating environment.

Johnny Glendinning, RPSI Chairman, together with the RPSI Training Standards Officer, have worked closely with NIR who have supported, with considerable foresight, this important initiative.

The Society gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the funders in supporting these projects, and the ongoing help and guidance provided by NIR. It is recognition of the important part we play in keeping alive part of our industrial heritage, with all the participative and educational opportunities that it provides for future generations.
