Portrush Flyer Preparation
If you had been at Whitehead in the early hours of the 7th August 2004, then you could have witnessed scenes like this:
Whitehead Works Image It's 5:45am and whilst No.85's boiler builds pressure, James Friel is pumping oil into the locomotives axle boxes.  Unseen under the locomotive is RPSI engineer Peter Scott.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the locomotive Chris Eddison is hard at work cleaning the locomotive first with a rag soaked in diesel and then a clean rag.  The hose is topping up the tender water. Whitehead works photo news image.

Website administrator Phil Lockett proves that he does do other work...occasionally. Whitehead works photo news image.

8:30am and the loco is at the head of her train and ready for the off.  James, Chris and Phil are ready for breakfast and a rest having lit the fire in the locomotive a few hours before. Whitehead works photo news image.

On the footplate the loco crew have arrived - Ashley, Phil, Noel Playfair (NIR Driver) and Gary Moore (NIR Fireman).
A nod from the Inspector, a blow of the whistle and the regulator is opened.

Thats what it was all for.  No.85 looks clean and on form as she passes Ballyclare Junction with the outward Portrush Flyer.

I hope this has given you a fun insight into work behind the scenes at Whitehead.
