Work on Cravens carriage 1541

Perhaps less in the public eye than work that goes on at our base at Whitehead is the carriage maintenance and restoration work that our volunteers undertake at Inchicore works in Dublin.
The group concentrate on maintaining the heritage set of wooden bodied carriages, and recently they have turned their attention to a recently aquired rake of steel bodied Cravens carriages.
Here is some of the work that went into preparing No.1541 for its unveiling as part of the 'Dundalk 50' event in September 2008.

RPSI Photonews Image After a lot of rubbing down, 1541 was ready to receive the first of many coats of undercoat.  Cooperative as ever, Iarnród Éireann had permitted the use of this raised platform for the project, which certainly made this stage of the work a lot easier.

The RPSI's volunteers are a small group of people who achieve big things.  Every one of our main line steam trains requires many, many hours of work by dedicated people who use their spare time to do something really worthwhile, united by our love of our railway heritage and having many a good laugh along the way.
