Sensory Steam – A Playful Railway Experience

Join us at Whitehead Railway Museum this February for Sensory Steam – A Playful Railway Experience, part of the Playful Museums Festival. Sensory Steam is a relaxed, sensory-friendly event aimed at children aged 2–6 years, with a particular focus on neurodivergent children and those who benefit from calm, playful environments.

The event will feature a range of extra, hands-on activities designed to encourage imaginative and sensory play. Children can enjoy dress-up and roleplay stations, tactile play, light and shadow exploration, and gentle sound activities inspired by the railway setting. Activities are child-led and flexible, allowing children to explore at their own pace in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

As part of the Playful Museums Festival, children will have free access to the Sensory Steam activities, kindly funded by Northern Ireland Museums Council. Families will also have access to explore the wider museum, with adult entry tickets available to purchase separately.

Sessions are limited and pre-booking is essential. Please note that there will be no train rides included as part of this event; Sensory Steam is a museum-based experience only. Sensory bags will also be available for children to use if they feel overwhelmed, providing additional support and reassurance during their visit.

Sensory Steam offers families an inclusive, welcoming way to enjoy the museum together, creating positive early experiences in a space where every child is supported and valued.

The museum is fully wheelchair accessible with lifts available.
