Whitehead Railway MuseumPrice
£3 / £5The award-winning Whitehead Railway Museum is a must-see for anyone of any age with an interest in trains, railway heritage or local history. The five galleries include a signal box where you can pull the levers to change a signal. You can see the giants of steam close up and stroll through historic carriages including the saloons in which Queens and Presidents once travelled.
You can hop on board the footplate of a 100-year-old steam engine and see what life was like for the train driver. Don't miss the viewing gallery giving you a bird’s eye view of the locomotive workshops around which the museum is wrapped.
Learn how the development of the railways transformed society by giving people access to far-off towns and villages, plus seaside resorts. And see a special display about the key role trains played in transporting barrels of stout around the country.
On the historic 1907 platform at Whitehead Excursion Station you can board our train for a trip within our premises to experience the magic of steam.
Hauled by our vintage steam engine and sitting in a 1960s carriage you will be transported to a bygone era. Afterwards, you will be able to see at close hand how the magnificent steam locomotive works.
Entry to the museum is free for European Heritage Open Day on 13th September. In addition, there will be an opportunity to take a short pay-for steam train ride.
No need to book for the visit to the museum but tickets for the train can be pre-booked.
